Vivienne Westwood
Taking a look back at the Vivienne Westwood spring summer 2007 collection. Vivienne Westwood has to be one of the few (if not the only) designers who can successfully mix fashion, art, and social commentary.
Titled “I Am Expensiv” the SS07 collection was presented in Paris. The question she asked was “Can Barbie have a conscience?”, emphasizing the lavish world of fashion and the divide it has with a poverty plagued world. Vivienne Westwood spoke to Reuters backstage where some of the models had paraded down the catwalk with a mane of golden hair and huge belts with the slogan “i am expensive” and told them “I designed a sort of Barbie doll in a box, with a hole in her head, totally spoilt. The message that was being put across was “I am expensive and i am subsidised by all the poor people in the world” We are spoilt and have a responsibility to ourselves to do something” she said.

The punk look was launched by the Grande Dame of fashion in the seventies with clashed fabrics, amazing patched up dresses, classic black suit that was knee length and finished with a Stetson hat, customised hand finished tees worn with skirts with puffed out behinds. There was an amazing ball gown which the bottom of it looked like a satin nappy, this dress drew cheers and whistles from an audience packed to the rafters and Janet Jackson sat front row, not to mention buyers from the worlds top stores. The models were great as well having fun strutting down the catwalk with watering cans, ciggies and any other interesting prop they could get there hands on!
Vivienne Westwood also sent a renewed message for the release of Leonard Peltier, an American Indian activist convicted for the murder of 2 FBI agents in ‘75. “Leonard Peltier is innocent. 30 years in jail for something he didnt do. I think you have to fight for justice before law. You cant have culture or civilization if you dont fight for justice. That is the first thing everybody has to try to do”
Westwood called again for the release of Leonard Peltier, an American Indian activist convicted for the 1975 killing of two FBI agents. “Leonard Peltier is innocent. 30 years in jail for something he didn’t do. I think you have to fight for justice before the law. You can’t have culture or civilization if you don’t fight for justice. That’s the first thing everybody has to try to do.”
